The employment tribunal ruled that the employer was liable of discriminating against a disabled person, and failing to initiate measures aimed at protecting the disabled[9]. Another case is the Archibald vs. the Fife Council. In this case, Mrs. Archibald was unable to walk because of complications in surgery. The council gave her the roles of an office worker, removing her from the sweeping job. When she tried to apply for a promotion, she was unable to get one[10]. This is because the job entailed one to engage in competitive interviews. However, no reasonable adjustments were made by the council to accommodate the interests of Mrs. Archibald. The House of Lords allowed the appeal and denoted that the council was discriminating against her, because they did not make any reasonable adjustments to accommodate her interests[11]. The aims of these disability discrimination laws is to promote and encourage the participation of the disabled in all spheres of their lives, which i ncludes political, economic, and social spheres of their lives. In 2001, based on the need of promoting equity in education, the parliament enacted the 2001 Disability and Special Education Needs Act[12]. This was an extension of the Disability Discrimination Act of 1995, and it highlights virtually all areas of education. This law makes it a crime for school institutions to deny a disabled person education based on his physical incapability[13]. The main purpose of this law is to make sure that disabled people are able to access the same quality of education, like that of their counter-parts who are not disabled. This law manages to explain the various functions and duties of disability bodies[14]. It also explains how these institutions will conduct their affairs for purposes of protecting the disabled people within the society. However, it is important to denote that the Disability and Special Needs Education Act only deals with the methods of avoiding unlawful discrimination of students with disability. In conclusion, the main disability anti-discrimination law in the United Kingdom is the disability discrimination act of 1995. In as much as this law has passed through a series of amendments over the years, it gives people with disability equal rights in areas such as employment, education, access to social facilities, and right of services from government institutions. It is important to denote that currently, the UK uses the equality act as its main anti-discrimination law. It has virtually all the provisions that are contained in the 1995 disability discrimination act. These legislations are necessary and appropriate because they help to promote equitable distribution of resources. Karen Sanchez, a volunteer manager who has a passion for children and a love to help them in any possible way she could. Her role at the children’s shelter is to assign individuals who have the same passion as her to volunteer and play with the children but most of all to make them feel safe and cared for. Mrs. Sanchez took time out of her busy schedule to meet with us on October 6, 2015 at The San Antonio Children’s Shelter to share information about the children shelter that gives us more information about the care, mission, and goals about the children’s shelter. One thing I had noticed the most, was how members of the Birling family, had very different reactions to the death of Eva Smith. However at times she also showed she can be hot headed. The Inspector shows the photograph of Eva Smith to Sheila. Sheila acted very violently to the photograph as she Gives a half- stifled sob, and then runs out. This just shows that Sheila recognized the photograph and felt very guilty for what she had done. It was my own fault. Sheila speaks honestly and accepts the responsibility for what she did to Eva. Sheila finds it relatively to relate to Eva smith. This was because they were both young pretty girls who had just been led down different turns in life. If I could help her now I would. Gerald comes across to be quite easy going. You can see why the Birlings want him to marry Sheila, as he is the well-bred young man-about-town. However as you find out later on in the book, he is also very deceptive and secretive. I was awfully busy at the works all that time. Gerald attempts to lie to the inspector and Sheila at first; however he immediately gives himself away by pulling himself together and getting himself a drink after the news. Even after giving himself away, Gerald still only tries to satisfy the Inspector and Sheila, by only giving them small pieces of information instead of the whole truth. All right. I knew her. Lets leave it at that. Gerald however, is the only one who actually showed affection towards Eva Smith. He showed care and became distressed when he found out Eva Smith (or Daisy Renton as Gerald knew her) was dead. In some ways Gerald is like Mr Birling. Mr Birling doesnt think about what he has done, but tries to hide it and prevent a public scandal. Gerald became distressed at the death of Daisy Renton, but at the end of the book this is all forgotten and he is worried only about himself and his own reputation. Gerald has not listened to the inspectors lesson and along with Mr Birling, he thinks everything can go back to normal. Mrs Birling is oblivious to what is going on around her. She is cold, distant and stubborn. Please dont contradict me like that. Mrs Birling thinks very highly of herself and even though she works at a ladies charity; she believes her superiority gives her the right to look down on the lower class. Girls of that class. Mrs Birling became prejudiced of Eva Smith, and felt no guilt in refusing to help a girl like that. But I think she had only herself to blame. In the end, we see her reaction to all these events. Firstly, before the inspector leaves she finds out the truth about Eric, and shows the least composure since the beginning of the play. Distressed, shakes her head but does not reply. Mrs Birling soon gathers composure when she realizes that it might have been a hoax. Sheila said that they began to learn but then stopped. Mrs Birling goes right back to the way she was before. She looks down on her children and the lower classes, and has clearly not learned anything from the past events. In the morning they will be as amused as we are. Eric comes across as being silly and wild and drinking too much. He is a heavy drinker, but his parents are completely unaware of this problem. From the beginning, when the inspector first tells the family about a girl who killed herself, Eric involuntarily shouts out My God! From Erics actions right from the start of the book, we start to get the impression that he has been up to something. This shows that Eric was still feeling very guilty about what he had done. When the inspector starts asking Eric questions he goes on telling a vague story confirming that he did get Eva Smith pregnant and did steal money. Eric trys to blame responsibility onto other then you killed her. . There are no excuses for what at Eric did however at least he has admitted the truth that he was wrong, and knows that the important thing wasnt the money or a scandal, but Eva. The moneys not the important thing. Its what happened to the girl and what we did to her that matters. His parents did not act as badly, but they have not been able to learn this lesson. Evaluating My Life In Light Of Erikson's Psychosoc Essays Evaluating My Life In Light Of Erikson's Psychosocial Stages Evaluating My Life In Light Of Eriksons Psychosocial Stages I think, over the period involving the first 12 to 18 months of my life, I was able to resolve the first of Eriksons psychosocial stages adequately. My mother, during this time, supplied me with appropriate provisions of food, warmth, and the comfort of physical closeness. This allowed me to understand and accept that objects and people exist even when I could not see them. This was a major stepping stone where the foundation for trust became important. In the next period of my life, from about 18 months to 3 years of age, I was able to resolve the second of Eriksons psychosocial stages adequately. It was around this time that I began to assume important responsibilities for my own self-care like feed myself, using the toilet on my own, and dressing myself. It was during this time also that I began learning many physical skills, including walking and grasping. I learned that I could control my own body and its functions. And that I could make things happen. Eriksons third stage of psychosocial development came between the ages of 3 to 6 years of age. I was continuing to become more assertive and to take more initiative. My mother and my teachers at school encouraged this. I am pretty sure that I was allowed, at least on he weekends (Ha Ha), to choose what I wanted to wear and was allowed to wear whatever I had chosen. In the fourth stage of Eriksons psychosocial development, between 6 and 12 years of age, I was learning to see the relationship between perseverance and the pleasure of a job well done. I was physically and mentally ready to be productive and to do work on my own. I also had many friends at this time and understood what friendship was. I believe that having good friends and peers helped me to be productive and succeed in both school and after school activities. In Eriksons identity vs. role confusion, stage 5, from 12 to 18 years of age, I was gaining a sense of my own identity. I was seeing myself as separate from my parents. Due to the outcome and resolution to conflict in earlier stages I was able to make this transition smoothly. I am currently involved in stage 6, young adulthood, from ages 19 to 40. I believe that I have achieved a healthy intimate relationship with my husband. We are both open to one another and committed to each other. We give and share with one another on a daily basis without wanting or expecting anything in return. Although Eriksons stage7 has a range from 40 to 65 years I believe that I have reconciled many of the issues involved here. Having had my first child 11.5 years ago I have been concerned, and continue to be concerned, with what life will be like for my children when they are grown and have children of their own. I wonder what will be in store for my grandchildren when they are growing old as well. Will the air be clean enough to breathe? Will there be enough food? My goodness there isnt enough food to feed all the people now. Will there be enough room for them to live? Will they be able to support their families? As for Eriksons final stage...I look forward to the day when I can look back on my life with a sense of fulfillment and acceptance of the things that I have done with my life and the lives of my children, grandchildren, etc, etc.... In conclusion, I honestly dont think that I can separate how only three of these stages interact with a later stage. Maybe this was a trick question?! These stages all fit together like building blocks. With one leading directly into the next and building from the previous stage or stages. You need them all to work together, in my opinion, to support each other. I dont think if I was to have left one stage without an adequate resolution I could have moved on to accomplish the next. How Women Became Part of the 1964 Civil Rights Act Is there any truth to the legend that women’s rights were included in the United States Civil Rights Act of 1964 as an attempt to defeat the bill? What Title VII Says Title VII of the Civil Rights Act makes it unlawful for an employer: to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The Now-Familiar List of Categories The law prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex and national origin. However, the word â€Å"sex† was not added to Title VII until Rep. Howard Smith, a Democrat from Virginia, introduced it in a one-word amendment to the bill in the House of Representatives in February 1964. Why Sex Discrimination Was Added Adding the word â€Å"sex† to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act ensured that women would have a remedy to fight employment discrimination just as minorities would be able to fight racial discrimination. But Rep. Howard Smith had previously gone on the record as opposing any federal Civil Rights legislation. Did he actually intend for his amendment to pass and the final bill to succeed? Or was he adding womens rights to  the bill so that it would have less chance of success? Opposition Why would legislators who were in favor of racial equality suddenly vote against civil rights legislation if it also prohibited discrimination against women? One theory is that many Northern Democrats who supported a Civil Rights Act to combat racism were also allied with labor unions. Some labor unions had opposed including women in employment legislation. Even some women’s groups had opposed including sex discrimination in the legislation. They feared losing labor laws that protected women, including pregnant women and women in poverty. But did Rep. Smith think that his amendment would be defeated, or that his amendment would pass and then the bill would be defeated? If labor union-aligned Democrats wanted to defeat the addition of â€Å"sex,† would they rather defeat the amendment than vote against the bill? Indications of Support Rep. Howard Smith himself claimed that he genuinely offered the amendment in support of women, not as a joke or an attempt to kill the bill.  Rarely does a congressperson act entirely alone. There are multiple parties behind the scenes even when one person introduces a piece of legislation or an amendment. The National Woman’s Party was behind the scenes of the sex discrimination amendment. In fact, the NWP had been lobbying to include sex discrimination in law and policy for years. Also, Rep. Howard Smith had worked with longtime women’s rights activist Alice Paul, who had chaired the NWP. Meanwhile, the struggle for womens rights was not brand new. Support for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) had been in the Democratic and Republican Party platforms for years. Arguments Taken Seriously Rep. Howard Smith also presented an argument about what would happen in the hypothetical scenario of a white woman and a black woman applying for a job. If the women encountered employer discrimination, would the black woman rely on the Civil Rights Act while the white woman had no recourse?   His argument indicates that his support for including sex discrimination in the law was genuine, if for no other reason than to protect white women who would otherwise be left out. Other Comments on the Record The issue of sex discrimination in employment was not introduced out of nowhere. Congress had passed the Equal Pay Act in 1963. Furthermore, Rep. Howard Smith had previously stated his interest in including sex discrimination in civil rights legislation. In 1956, the NWP supported including sex discrimination in the purview of the Civil Rights Commission. At that time, Rep. Smith said that if the civil rights legislation he opposed was inevitable, then he â€Å"certainly ought to try to do whatever good with it that we can.†Ã‚  (For more information on Smiths comments and involvement, see Jo Freeman’s â€Å"How Sex Got Into Title VII.†)   Many Southerners were opposed to legislation that forced integration, partly because they believed the federal government was unconstitutionally interfering with states’ rights. What Patients Want Most tools that we use to judge patient satisfaction or outcome of a medical service cannot be accurately quantified. Also, the success metric for a medical care varies from physician and patient’s point of view. An example of such tools was administered by Steward.et al in 2000 where many physician-patient interactions were audio taped and patients rated these conversations. After analysis, it was deduced that patients recovered faster, had better emotional health and perceived the care as satisfactory if the care was patient-centered. The faith of patients on their healthcare providers increased when there emotional needs were taken care of by the physicians leading to less number of diagnostic tests and fewer referrals. A similar methodology can also be used to study physician empathy. Researchers at Jefferson University developed the Jefferson scale to test physician’s empathy where physicians rated their own empathy but this scale could not be used to judge patient satisfaction. Thus, a new scale called Jefferson Scale of Patient’s perception of Physician Empathy was used which judges patient’s rating of physician’s empathy which correlated to patient’s satisfaction. Mostly what patients want is a relationship of empathy with physicians, who can help them communicate with the problem and develop a personal relationship with them. The perception of care is different from physicians and patient’s point of view and we need to move our focus from â€Å"what’s the matter† with our patients to â€Å"what matters† to our patients. [1] Hindrance in achieving true patient centric care One of the most crucial factors stopping US in achieving true patient centric care is the current reimbursement system and focus on physician practice model. There is no measure in US to gauge the quality of care, empathy and relationship of a physician with patients. Reimbursement is not correlated to these factors, instead it is based on per patient encounter. Due to this, primary care physicians focus on increasing the volume of patients and reduce the time spent with each patient. Most physicians are in a hurry and under stress which leads to misdiagnosis, useless tests and referrals, decrease in quality of care and a very formal relationship between physician and patients. [6] Next important factor is that physicians employed by hospitals are incentivized or prized depending on number of patients that they bring but there is no measure to the quality of care they impart. The volume of patients precede quality because the financial benefits are huge e.g.- Each lab tests physicians’ order, each referrals they make, benefits hospitals in terms of huge monetary benefits which in turn becomes a basis of primary care physician’s salaries. Thus, understandably what drives physicians is to employ methods to increase volume of patients, decrease time spent with each patient and other ways to monetize each patient-physician interaction. [3] The third hindrance is hospitals hiring generalists called hospitalists to provide care to patients with the goal of reducing patient days per admission. This might lead to improve in care for a certain amount of time but the reason behind hiring such individuals is not to improve patient care but instead to benefit hospitals financially. The Patient Centric Approach model Patient Centered Medical Home Patient Centric medical home helps address the patient centric approach by emphasizing on high quality patient care and lower the healthcare cost. They reorganize primary care practice by recognizing the importance of patient’s experience and works on system based approach to transform health services being offered. PCMH centers their service on elderly with acute care needs, patients with physical disabilities and with specific preferences in terms of culture and values. The care offered is comprehensive and designed to meet patients’ needs including physical and mental attention, chronic care and long term assistance like help in performing daily ablutions for patients with functional limitations. [8] Accountable Care Organizations ACOs have been set up with the goal of ensuring high quality of care is given to patients at the right time to prevent medical errors and reduce medical costs. Mostly ACOs are formed by group of doctors and hospitals who voluntarily come together to serve Medicare patients. [9] The basic promise that ACOs hold is to have patient centered care and treat patients with empathy, care and work towards avoiding unnecessary costs and develop a personal relationship with patients. Thus, government should incentivize formation of more ACOs to ensure more patient- centric approach. Strategic IT investment IT is the obvious answer to increase efficiency, reduce medical errors and improve quality of care in US. Though there are many facets of IT that can be used, use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Electronic Medical records (EMR) are the most important tools to use. EMRs are digitized version of patient record keeping for a physicians. EMR has been instrumental in reducing medical costs overtime by enabling better interactions between departments and monitoring patient’s visiting time and medical information. Patients can also log on and know about their health records and be better prepared. EHRs stores patient’s records so that if needed emergency departments can access it before giving them any medicines. This saves the cost of duplicate tests because all the data needed to prescribe medicines are present in EHRs. Feedback and review model: Patient Opinion Patient opinion was founded in 2005 and is the leading feedback platform for healthcare in UK. They allow patients to write their reviews/ stories about their experience and tag the particular provider. Other users can then favorite the post if they have experience the same thing. Patient Opinion also has an analytical engine which does sentiment analysis for each hospital and show what areas need improvement and which departments received positive reviews. The hospitals can read these reviews posted about them and respond to the complaints and praises. This helps them to improve their quality of care and address the issues raised by patients. We know India is an underdeveloped economy and therefore the nature of unemployment here differs from the one that prevails in a developed economy. In India there is chronic under-employment or disguised unemployment in the rural sector and unemployment among the educated classes in the urban areas. The main cause of unemployment among the educated lot is the slow rate growth of the economy in relation to increase in the number of educated persons. Several factors are responsible for the problem of unemployment. Our defective system of education which lays too much emphasis on literary training is perhaps the main cause of unemployment. Our government’s faculty planning is also responsible of this problem to a great extent. It fails to create suitable job opportunities for all. Population explosion is a big reason to bring this problem into existence. Population of our country is increasing at fast rate but job opportunities are not increasing accordingly. Engineering and Medical profession have a great attraction for many. But even those professions do not present a very bright picture. First of all it is very difficult to get admission in a Medical or an Engineering College. The education in professional colleges is so expensive that only the rich can afford it. Thus young men and women are facing very tough time. Sometimes it has been seen that they choose a career for which they possess neither the capability nor the attitude. This is the root cause of many young men’s failure in life. It is therefore necessary to provide young men and women with educational as well as vocational guidance. This will help them choose a profession in accordance with their capability and aptitude. Our government has taken several important measures to solve this growing problem. With a view to increase employment government has made sincere efforts to adopt and encourage labour intensive investment and production programmes. In this connection attention was paid on agriculture, agro-based industries, and cottage industries. Since 1976 a weekly Journal-â€Å"Employment  News† is being published both in English and Hindi. Education is also being planned in such a way that educated youths should be free from employment problem. Vocational education with the needs and requirements of the country is being arranged. A new education policy, 1986 has been launched. With the primary objective of generating additional employment, especially in backward regions and weaker sections, a nu mber of employment programmes have been started by the Govt, of India. These are IROP, The Desert Development Programme, tne National Rural Employment Programme, The Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Programme, the National Scheme of Training of Rural Youth for Self Employment increase in employment has been one of the major objectives in all Five-year Plans of India. Technical and Vocational education is being given in schools. Family planning is encouraged among the young men and women to control population. Huck’s encounters with various Southern men, women, and families all represent the South in the war, but it is Tom’s uncle, Silas Phelps, that represents the South the most. Physically locking Jim up with chains, Phelps shows the brutality towards the slaves and how they are treated as property in the South. Huck and Tom fight against his uncle by helping Jim escape, just as the North does for slaves in the South at the time. Mark Twain’s writing style contributes greatly to the book.
